Notes 2004
Kathryn Gould
I saw this lady on PBS Friday night and thought she was very interesting. Smart, interesting personality, warm and fun, good looking, and rich. The only weakness I could see was she had too much on her plate- I can't help think her husband and son don't see her very often.

Kerry For President
The author of this Tech Central Station makes a well reasoned argument for Kerry for President.
Yesterday I was reading this month's 'The Atlantic Magazine'; there are two anti-bush pieces there were also well reasoned. 1. Bush's Lost Year
by James Fallows "By deciding to invade Iraq, the Bush Administration decided not to do many other things: not to reconstruct Afghanistan, not to deal with the threats posed by North Korea and Iran, and not to wage an effective war on terror. An inventory of opportunities lost." The other piece was on the hunt for Bin Laden. The Long Hunt for Osama by Peter Bergen "Where has he been? How did we ever let him get away? Our correspondent—one of the few Western journalists ever to have met Osama bin Laden—traces the al-Qaeda leader's footsteps in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and describes the sometimes hapless American pursuit."

Some Arabs Get It
Sure a lot of arabs hate us, but I don't think they really mean it. Sure these comments were hand picked, but it's still nice to read.

Rick Rescorla
From Vietnam to the World Trade Center, Rick Rescorla was a god damn hero and deserves the CMO. Go to the web site (link in the title), read the story and sign the online petition.

Is it A Forgery?
Everyone is wondering is the CBS Document a forgery. Could a 30 plus year old typewriter have created this document. At first glance I would say no. It does look like something from Microsoft Word. However, as I told my friend Bob, "I wouldn't rule out a good IBM typewriter. I'm not sure how long they've been around but I know they had some pretty good ones." This web site (link in title) fills in some of those details. I still think the document itself is a forgery, there was probably NEVER a document like this. HOWEVER, I do believe the ideas expressed in the document are true. Bush probably did skip his physical. This physical is required for flight. Without it he would be grounded. But it doesn't matter. Bush was only certified to fly the F-102, but the F-102 was grounded because it was too dangerous to fly and had be replaced.
And yet, Bush had more than enough flight hours to satisfy his National Guard requirements. I don't think people have considered the difference between commanding (steering?) a PT boat and actually flying a supersonic fighter. Especially one as crash prone as the F-102.

Counter Protesting by ProtestWarrior
This is something that I wish there was more off.
I find it very enlivening. (if that's a word) I'm so tired of liberals and others spouting off a bunch of nonsense that I'm sure they've never thought through.
Here are some protest slogans Protest Warriors were saying:
- PROTECT ISLAMIC PROPERTY RIGHTS AGAINST WESTERN IMPERIALISM declares a sign over a picture of a Muslim woman in a burqa with a leash around her neck tied to a pole.
- EXCEPT FOR ENDING SLAVERY, FASCISM, AND COMMUNISM, WAR HAS NEVER SOLVED ANYTHING, says another.
- The most provocative, perhaps, is a picture of a Palestinian woman with a T shirt on her burqa saying MY SON SUICIDE-BOMBED A BUS FULL OF ISRAELIS AND ALL I GOT WAS THIS LOUSY T-SHIRT; the small print underneath reads AND $25,000 FROM SADDAM.

Big Daddy Root Beer Brewers
Paul came back from vacation and had this book: "Homemade Root Beer, Soda, & Pop" by Stephen Edward Cresswell. It looks pretty good. I think Paul and I should get into the Root Beer business or at least brew some of our own Root Beer.

Funniest Thing I've Read This Year
I found two seperate posts about emailing scam artists. I'm not sure which one is the best.
- #1 419eater.com
- This guy not only spoofed his emailer but actually got him to send $80, something you would rarely see.
- #2 Dr. John Bigbootie of Yoyodyne industries
- This one is even funnier. I've included a link to the movie in case you don't know who Buckaroo Banzai is.
UpdateThis gets even better if you check out the 419eater.com website and read the entire story with photos. It's long, but I guarantee it's the funniest thing you'll every read.

Police Question the Evil Vic Tiggen
Police questioned Vic Tiggen about his activities in the Sun Mech house on the end of the block. Also known as "The Old Maass Store" or the Sun Meth labs. Vic claimed no knowledge of this; then proceeded to play the Beer Barrow Polka on his accordian.
Communities in spotlight
By Dawn Peake,The Forum
Published Wednesday, August 04, 2004The police arrived early to a National Night Out block party on the 1100 block of Eighth Street North in Fargo. A SWAT team raided a home at the end of the street Tuesday morning in a drug bust. Neighbors don't know what happened, but they're already looking for ways to improve their block. Shaded by an archway of tall, old trees, they sat in a circle of lawn chairs, talking about the Neighborhood Association meeting on Thursday and their feelings about adding street lights to a block with only one. The smaller lights deter crime without shining into bedroom windows, Deb Williams of 1135 8th St. N. told her neighbors. Williams said recent incidents have brought neighbors together to help create a safer street. "That's what brings a neighborhood together -- trouble," she said. "This is a neighborhood where people talk over the fence." Residents never expected to see officers file out of two vans Tuesday morning and into a home on their block, where neighbors have installed gates between each other's homes and talk about the latest remodeling projects. "When we heard there was trouble at the end of the street, we were shocked -- shocked," said Sybil Hopkins, who has lived at 1128 8th St. N. for 15 years. "For the most part, we have been pretty crime-free," said Arlene Tiggen of 1109 8th St. N. Residents said they have been diligent about calling the police when incidents occur, to keep their block safe. Sue Lindblad of 1119 8th St. N. has started checking crime watch on The Forum's Web site to see how many times police have been called to her neighborhood and why. "I'm trying to keep tabs," said Lindblad, who moved onto the block with her husband and son six years ago. "You've got kids and there are so many other kids in the neighborhood. You watch out for everybody." Two back-to-back meth busts last spring about three blocks from the close-knit neighborhood put residents on alert. "It has made us more aware," Williams said. "We need to be on the lookout." Knowing who lives along the block helps residents fight crime and keep the block safe for the dozen children who ride their bikes along sidewalks decorated with chalk. The neighborhood has had a block party every year since Tiggen (Arlene Teigen) and her husband, Vic, moved into their home more than 25 years ago. The night allows them to catch up with old neighbors and welcome new ones, she said. Fargo Police Capt. Jeff Williams made an impression this year by playing an accordion he borrowed from a resident. Residents have walked away with stories about a belly dancer and a barber shop quartet performing at past parties. Fargo, which had 30 block parties Tuesday, was among more than 9,000 communities in the United States, Canada and military bases around the world that participated in the annual crime prevention event. Readers can reach Forum reporter Dawn Peake at (701) 241-5557
With borrowed instrument in hand, Fargo Police Captain Jeff Williams draws applause Tuesday after playing a song on an accordion while attending a block party on the 1100 block of Eighth Street North. Area resident Suzanne Strache happily lent it to the officer as they celebrated National Night Out. Darren Gibbins / The Forum

Bush's Multi-lateral Anti-Terrorism Foreign Policy
"...thanks to the media and Democrats who insist on portraying the Bush administration as "unilateral," you have probably never heard of it.
Called the Proliferation Security Initiative, this results-oriented alliance is now just over a year old. The work of the much maligned Under Secretary of State for Arms Proliferation and International Security John Bolton, PSI is already a great success in bringing nations that disagreed bitterly over the Iraq war together under one flag to deal with larger weapons proliferation issues, especially those relating to the Korean Peninsula. Its membership includes most of the world's largest economic powers, most of the world's largest military powers, and most of the most influential states on earth. The United States, Japan, the United Kingdom, Russia, the Netherlands, France, Australia and Germany are among its 15 member states, and it is one of the pillars of the Bush administration's strategy to both win the war on terrorism and halt the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. As an organization set up to perform a mission that the United Nations and the International Atomic Energy Agency have jointly failed, halting the spread of nuclear weapons, it has the potential of becoming an alternative to the UN itself in coming decades. Notably, all of its members to date are democracies."

Fargo Downtown: Renaissance or Dark Ages
This article in the Fargo Forum points out something Suzanne and Paul are seeing at PD's on First- namely there isn't all that much business downtown; certainly not this summer. The article will probably only be up for 7 days and you may have to register.
Lauerman opened Jim Lauerman's Chili, Sandwiches & Beer at 64 Broadway on St. Patrick's Day in 1982.
"We've had lunch since Day One," he said. Chili – based on a Southwestern recipe but tamed for Midwest taste buds – was always the big seller, but Lauerman expanded the menu over the years to include multiple sandwich, soup and salad offerings. In the end, he said, the menu was just too big.
Meanwhile, the number of diners was dwindling. "Not enough people downtown. Too many other places to eat. No parking," Lauerman said. A parking lot behind his place, which once offered parking by the hour, now is rented only to monthly parkers.
"You don't see anybody downtown here anymore who doesn't work here," Lauerman said. With all the chain restaurants in southwest Fargo, fewer people are willing to venture downtown for lunch, according to Lauerman.
And where 20 years ago diners would order a beer with their lunch, Lauerman today said it was a good day if he sold two beers during the noon hour. "These booths used to be full in the afternoon, with people drinking beer," Lauerman said. "You do that today, and it's a sin. The times aren't changing. They've changed."
Dave Anderson of the Downtown Community Partnership said he was glad to hear Lauerman's lunch closing is apparently temporary.
"Over the last couple of years, downtown really has seen an explosion in the number of places to have lunch," Anderson said. "Lauerman's has always been a very popular lunch spot. I've got to think this is just a summer slowdown."

Carolyne Mas
I couldn't find any listing in any of my Rock Music reference books. I couldn't find her on Trouser Press' website. She had at least two major album releases. And they were pretty good. Most of the bands in Trouser Press would kill to have half the talent and career she had, so what give. A google search turned up a couple fan sites. This one was the best.
Now if someone would do the same for Sue Saad and the Next!

This is one of the finest things I've read on the internet in months. I defy you to disagree with it!!!! (Ha ha) I must warn you, it's pretty long and sarcastic in spots. (Which is why it's so good.)

G3 Blue and White Mac Tower
I got an eye out for a nice Mac Tower. This is the very minimum I would be getting at $200, with the top being $2000 for a G5 dual processor Mac Tower.

iCard email Greeting Cards
Usually I just use Hallmark's website, but I wasn't happy with the choices. I remembered Apple.com use to have e-Cards and I was impressed with those. It took me a long time to find this on their site, so I decided I better note the site somehow.
